Let's Chalk It Up

One of the best things about the home we left behind in Atlanta whenever we moved to Texas was our chalk wall - located right as you walked in the front door. All of our walls around the house were a beautiful creamy white, but after thinking about it for a couple of years, I wanted to really make a pop in our entry. I went back and forth about the color of chalk paint I wanted to use - going between a green and a charcoal, and after decided charcoal - I never looked back! I loved it so much.

The charcoal chalk paint we used is made by Rust-oleum, and loved the quality and finish. Because our wall was on the smaller side, we only needed one quart, but it did require 2 full coats in order to have full coverage.

Whenever I host parties at my home, either for birthdays, showers, going away parties, etc, I always do my best to make the honoree feel the most special with the details. Having a chalk wall to write on really makes a great first impression and sets the tone for the occasion! I posted a video of a timelapse of me creating a piece of art for a going away party. Here is how I make large scale artwork easy:

  • Step 1: I take a photo of the wall that I plan to work on.

  • Step 2: Using an iPad and an apple pencil, I bring the photo into the app “procreate” and start drawing my vision on another layer placed on top of the photo so I can get the correct scale.

  • Step 3: After finishing my artwork on the iPad, I plug my iPad into our projector using an HDMI cable. This mirrors the screen of my iPad and I project the artwork on the chalk wall!

  • Step 4: After I get the perspective of the projector lined up with the wall, I start copying the artwork onto the chalk wall and boom! Your artwork has come to life!

  • Pro Tip: I only use good old original white chalk whenever I create my artwork. If you choose a chalk pen, it will not come off of your wall easily (if at all!). To erase, I use a beach towel to wipe the wall down and it makes it super fast!
